Louise Harter Artist’s Statement
Pouring, storing, straining, serving—my pots are meant for use. Our hands know a satisfying handle through a lifetime’s experience of touching. Browse, with your hands, the well-made pots and feel the solidity and the charge sight can only begin to convey. In using pottery every day, comfort sneaks in and takes hold.
Bio
Louise Harter first learned to make pottery as a child at the Project Community Art Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She has lived and made pottery in Cambridge, New York City, Western North Carolina near the Penland School of Crafts, and now Bethany, Connecticut near New Haven. In each place, community art centers have trained and sustained her. Through these art centers she has found mentors, students, and life-long friends. After more than four decades of teaching and making, these two disciplines inform each other, lean on each other, have become entwined like vines on a trellis.
